Perenco confirms gas find off Trinidad and Tobago

Perenco T&T has discovered “significant” gas reserves at the Onyx field offshore Trinidad and Tobago, the company said on Thursday.

The find was made through successful drilling of a well and sidetrack in the eastern portion of the Onyx field, located in 55 metres of water between the Poui and Teak fields.

The field is part of the Teak, Samaan and Poui (TSP) licence operated by Perenco T&T alongside partners Heritage Petroleum and The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago. The two legs encountered substantial natural gas columns in separate geological compartments. Subsurface data is under review and development options are being assessed ahead of a final investment decision.

“I am very proud of the successful results of the Onyx wells. Our objective was to prove sufficient gas reserves to unlock field development,” Perenco T&T general manager Gregoire de Courcelles said.

“The wells’ findings are testimony to the hydrocarbon potential which remains in the TSP acreage and highlights Perenco’s commitment to provide future supplies of natural gas to Trinidad and Tobago. I would like to thank our partners Heritage Petroleum and NGC for their unwavering support in this project and congratulate all teams involved in completing this operation safely and efficiently.”

The drilling success marks a milestone in Perenco’s expansion strategy in Trinidad and Tobago, where it has operated since 2016 after taking over the TSP fields. It launched a modernisation programme to electrify the TSP asset and boost gas output. In December 2024, it acquired the Cashima, Amherstia, Flamboyant and Immortelle gas assets. On 28 March 2025, it agreed to acquire Woodside Energy’s interests in Blocks 2c and 3a (Greater Angostura), with the deal progressing towards completion.

Perenco is a privately owned independent oil and gas company with operations in 14 countries across Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia. It is active in both onshore and offshore environments, with key production hubs in Gabon, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the UK North Sea. Perenco engages in exploration, development and production activities, and also invests in gas infrastructure and power generation.
