Chevron Nigeria discovered oil in the Niger Delta’s Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) 49, the company announced on Friday.
Chevron described the discovery as a near-field find, in the shallow-water zone of the Western Niger Delta. The company further stated that the discovery has the potential to add up to 17,000 bopd.
Chevron jointly owns and operates the PML 49 with NNPC. The discovery well, Meji NW-1, is in the Meji field, which has experienced a two-thirds decline in production since its peak of 51,000 bopd in 2005.
Chevron operates and holds a 40% interest in eight concessions in the onshore and near-shore regions of the Niger Delta. The company has further interests in nine Nigerian deepwater blocks.
The new discovery should reverse the decline in production seen in the Meji field. In addition to increasing Nigeria’s oil resources, the discovery is part of Chevron’s global exploration strategy, which seeks new resources that will prolong the lifespan of existing assets.
