Yinson Production Ghana (“Yinson”) and the Ahanta West Educational Directorate have successfully hosted the third annual Yinson Reading and Spelling Bee competition themed, “Learn to Read, Read to Learn.”
This year’s competition saw its highest participation of 95 students from five circuits within the Ahanta West municipality, advancing from the preliminary rounds to compete in the grand finale. At the Junior High School (“JHS”) category, students were vying for the Yinson Educational Scholarship, which is designed to support the academic journey of the most outstanding students and facilitate their transition to Senior High School. The winners of the JHS category were Priscilla Asare and Ruth Kwofie, who stood out as the top female students, while Jerad Ansah emerged as the best male student.
Building on the success of last year’s competition, where the top male and female JHS students automatically qualified for the scholarship, this year’s competition introduced an additional slot for a female winner. This change underscores Yinson’s commitment to ensuring that the scholarship reaches out to more girls. Yinson will be sponsoring trunks, chop boxes, mattresses, provisions, termly stipends, textbooks, exercise books, shoes, and school bags during the three-year stay in senior high school.
The competition also welcomed for the first time the introduction of a uniform t-shirt for all participants, fostering a sense of unity and team spirit among the students. In addition to the apparel, all participants received books donated by Yinson, who also took the opportunity to donate another 500 reading books to the Kejebril Library, which we built in 2021. To date, Yinson has donated more than 1,000 books to the Library.
Reflecting on the journey, Edward Mensah, Yinson Production’s CSR Coordinator, emphasised the importance of literacy and the impact of the competition on the students. “Literacy is not merely the ability to read and write, it is a gateway to knowledge, empowerment and personal growth,” he said. “As we gather here, we recognize the importance of nurturing young minds, fostering a love for reading and encouraging academic excellence.”
Nana Ezieku IV, who has presided over the Spelling Bee Competition for three consecutive years, noted a significant improvement in the students’ reading and spelling skills. George Effah, Ahanta West Municipal Director of Education, praised Yinson for their unwavering commitment to enhancing literacy and education within the community.
As part of Yinson’s commitment to supporting the educational journey of the young minds in Ghana, The Yinson Reading and Spelling Bee competition has become a hallmark for promoting literacy and academic excellence in the region. The competition has seen an encouraging participation trend from 60 students in its inaugural year to 80 students in the subsequent year and now 95 students. Over the years, the competition has done more than just improve the reading and spelling skills of the students; it has kindled a passion for reading and learning that will serve them well in their academic journeys.
