Wood and Petrobras team up to design next-decade FPSOs

The groundbreaking partnership will help reduce emissions and enhance performance.UK-listed engineering house Wood has entered into an agreement with Brazil’s state controlled Petrobras to develop concept studies aimed at enhancing performance and reducing emissions for future floating production, storage and offloading vessels.

The initiative is aimed at innovative designs and recommendations to support the FPSO vision for the next decade, Wood said. The programme will focus on design concepts that minimise human risk exposure and boost operational reliability, aligning with current industry trends.

The study will evaluate the applicability of these concepts across the entire FPSO unit, specifically within one of the plant’s modules. In a second initiative, the partnership will investigate how to adapt the existing Petrobras Reference Design into an FPSO that does not rely on onboard electricity generation.

Instead, the design will utilise an external power source, drawing energy from offshore hubs or integrating with onshore systems, thereby addressing one of the primary sources of emissions associated with traditional FPSO designs.

Wood president of oil, gas and new energies John Day said: “These studies will explore innovative solutions that target concepts and specifications not yet adopted in conventional FPSO projects.”The programme will be managed from Wood’s Houston office, with additional support from its local team in Rio de Janeiro.
