Unity expands into Asia-Pac with first Malaysia rigless well intervention, P&A contract

Unity has entered the Asia-Pacific market after securing its first regional contract in partnership with Malaysia-based Reservoir Link Sdn. Bhd. to deliver a three-well rigless intervention program for a major international offshore operator in Malaysia.

The award marks Unity’s first significant project in the region and supports the company’s strategy to expand its well integrity and decommissioning services beyond its established North Sea operations.

The campaign will deploy Unity’s proprietary Surface Intervention System (SIS), a lightweight rigless solution designed to perform wellhead integrity repairs, restore production and support early-stage plug and abandonment (P&A) activities without requiring a conventional intervention vessel.

According to Unity, the system has been used on more than 20 projects since 2016, providing an alternative to vessel-based wireline and hydraulic workover operations while reducing logistical complexity and operating costs.

The company said the technology is particularly suited to mature offshore assets with small platforms, limited crane capacity, aging wellheads and personnel-on-board restrictions—conditions common across many Southeast Asian offshore developments.

“Our partnership with Reservoir Link marks the start of a new chapter for well intervention in Southeast Asia,” said Stuart Slater, Unity’s Asia-Pacific regional manager. “Together, we bring complementary strengths to the region, including in-country presence, locally based equipment and a shared commitment to helping operators keep decommissioning on track.”

Reservoir Link, a Malaysian provider of well intervention and energy services established in 2008, will provide local operational support, regulatory expertise and technical resources for the project. The company operates from facilities at the Asian Supply Base and Kemaman Supply Base, serving offshore developments throughout Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asian region.

“Malaysia represents a significant opportunity for rigless well intervention and plug and abandonment activities, where mature assets continue to drive demand for specialized services,” said Dato’ Wan Hassan Bin Mohd Jamil, group CEO and managing director of Reservoir Link. “Together, we are well-positioned to support operators in extending asset life, improving operational efficiency and advancing responsible decommissioning initiatives across the region.”

Unity said the partnership forms a key part of its Asia-Pacific growth strategy, leveraging more than three decades of experience delivering well integrity and decommissioning solutions for mature offshore assets in the North Sea.
