The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) recently announced their agreement to accelerate fusion energy research together. The U.S. regularly partners with allied nations to advance scientific research, but this agreement lays out mutual goals the two countries will work toward and binds them to that commitment. The U.S.-Japan Coordinating Committee on Fusion Energy (CCFE) will plan the implementation of the agreement to establish international regulations and codes, promote talent growth, develop facilities, and increase public engagement. The U.S. Energy Department stated, “This new partnership leverages the CCFE and is expected to further develop complementarity between U.S. and Japanese resources and facilities in fusion, including those in universities, national laboratories, and private companies in the respective countries.”
