TotalEnergies signs 20-year LNG deal with Canada’s Ksi Lisims project

TotalEnergies has signed an agreement to purchase 2 million tonnes per annum of LNG over 20 years from the Ksi Lisims LNG project in British Columbia, Canada, the company said on Monday.

The agreement, subject to the project’s final investment decision, also includes TotalEnergies acquiring a 5% stake in Western LNG, the project’s developer and future operator, with the option to raise its participation up to around 10% upon FID.

Located on the coast of northern British Colombia, the Ksi Lisims LNG project will produce 12 million tonnes per year of LNG and will be fully electrified using hydroelectric power, positioning it among the lowest CO2-emitting LNG facilities globally.

“This purchase of LNG from the future Ksi Lisims LNG plant will allow us to diversify our LNG portfolio in North America and benefit from competitive LNG supply in Western Canada to better serve our Asian customers, with whom we are developing a significant portfolio of long-term supply contracts,” TotalEnergies president of gas, renewables & power Stéphane Michel said.

“As part of our integrated strategy, we are also pleased to partner with Western LNG to support the development of this very low CO2 emission liquefaction plant project.”

TotalEnergies is the world’s third largest LNG player, managing a portfolio of 40 million tonnes annually in 2024 through investments in liquefaction plants worldwide.

The company maintains a strong presence across the LNG value chain, including production, transportation, regasification access of over 20 million tonnes per year in Europe, trading and LNG bunkering. Its goal is to increase natural gas to nearly half of its energy sales by 2030 while cutting carbon and methane emissions and supporting the coal-to-gas transition globally.

Western LNG is a Houston-based energy company specializing in the development of innovative and environmentally responsible LNG export projects across North America. The company is co-developing the Ksi Lisims LNG project in partnership with the Nisga’a Nation and Rockies LNG, aiming to deliver low-carbon LNG from British Columbia to global markets, particularly in Asia. This facility is designed to be fully electrified and powered by renewable hydroelectricity, positioning it as one of the lowest CO2-emitting LNG plants worldwide.
