Trump said after his talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday that he would urge Zelensky to make a quick deal and sounded receptive to the Russian leader’s demand that Ukraine give up large swathes of land. But in a show of support for Ukraine, leaders including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte joined the high-stakes meeting in Washington.
Oil fell as U.S. President Donald Trump reignited his global trade war, while his latest plan to pressure Russia into a ceasefire with Ukraine didn’t include new measures aimed directly at hindering Moscow’s energy exports.
Oil prices dropped dramatically after a surprisingly speedy ceasefire was agreed between Israel and Iran, although the peace remains fragile.
Meyersson warned in the report that future talks will be difficult if negotiation positions remain the same, adding that “all parties have an interest in ending the fighting, but need to overcome the crux of nuclear enrichment in Iran, as well as its ballistic missile program, in order for a durable deal”.
Many questions remain, including the state of Iran’s uranium stockpile and whether any ceasefire will lead to discussions about Tehran’s nuclear program. The Islamic Republic, which has denied it’s seeking an atomic weapon, has refused to give up the right to enrich uranium, a condition the US has insisted upon.
