SLB OneSubsea wins EPC contract for Norway CO2 storage expansion

SLB OneSubsea has been awarded an EPC contract by Equinor for a subsea CO2 injection system for phase two of the Northern Lights project offshore Norway, SLB said on Wednesday.

The contract includes two satellite subsea CO2 injection systems and tie-in equipment, with first deliveries expected in 2026. Northern Lights phase two will expand capacity from 1.5 million to at least 5 million tonnes of CO2 per year and is backed by EU CEF Energy funding. This follows SLB OneSubsea’s successful delivery of injection systems for phase one in 2023.

“Equinor’s enduring commitment to subsea standardisation is now yielding substantial benefits across new offshore value chains, including CO2 storage. By utilising standardised components, we achieve reduced risk and economies of scale, which enhance both traditional and innovative subsea projects,” SLB OneSubsea chief executive Mads Hjelmeland said. “The Northern Lights project is pivotal for Europe’s path toward net-zero emissions.”

Northern Lights phase one is complete and scheduled to begin operations in H2 2025, with all permits secured for CO2 injection and storage in the Aurora CCS licence in the North Sea.

SLB is a global technology company present in over 100 countries, delivering energy innovation across oil and gas, digital solutions, decarbonisation and new energy systems. Its OneSubsea joint venture with Aker Solutions and Subsea7 provides advanced subsea solutions and services to optimise oil and gas production and support the energy transition.
