SLB, Saudi Aramco and Linde have agreed to build one of the world’s largest carbon capture and storage hubs in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, SLB announced on Wednesday.
The Jubail CCS hub’s initial phase will see up to 9 million tonnes of CO2 captured and stored each year, with construction completed by the end of 2027. Additional phases are planned in order to further expand the hub’s capacity.
SLB highlighted Saudi Arabia’s “significant geological potential for CO2 storage” in saying the project will transport CO2 via a pipeline network and store it below ground in a saline aquifer sink.
A 2021 report from the Oil and Gas Climate initiative highlighted the “significant suitable storage resources available in Saudi Arabia in locations that are close to concentrations of emission sources.”
“SLB is proud to be a part of ground-breaking efforts to enable abatement of millions of tons of CO2 annually through the Jubail CCS hub. Leveraging our proven portfolio of CCS technologies and extensive experience in complex CCS projects around the world, we are confident that SLB will play a critical role in advancing this important initiative,” said Gavin Rennick, president of SLB’s New Energy business.
Aramco highlighted the “critical role” of CCS in the company’s own decarbonisation and sustainability journey. The company targets net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions across its wholly owned operated assets by 2050.
