Shell to boost Gulf of Mexico pipeline capacity

Shell Pipeline Company has reached a FID for the Rome Pipeline project linking Shell’s Green Canyon Block 19 (GC-19) offshore pipeline hub with the Fourchon Junction facility on the Louisiana Gulf Coast, Shell announced on Thursday

The GC-19 platform is located about 120 kilometres south of the Louisiana coastline. It is a destination for several deepwater fields, providing pipeline access to the Amberjack, Boxer, Eugene Island and CHOPS Pipeline systems. The Rome Pipeline will originate in GC-19 and run for approximately 160 kilometres adjacent to existing pipelines to add transport capacity and support expected increases in oil production in the western and central Gulf of Mexico.

“This investment will reinforce Shell’s strategic position in the US Gulf of Mexico through enhanced oil transport capacity, flexibility and efficiency,” said Andrew Smith, Shell’s executive vice-president of trading and supply.

Shell also announced an agreement with BP America Production Company for the Rome Pipeline to export 100% of the oil production from BP’s recently sanctioned Kaskida project in the Keathley Canyon area, which has the potential to unlock 10 billion barrels of resources.

The Rome Pipeline project is subject to permitting and regulatory agency approvals and is expected to begin operation in 2028.
