Shell starts up Whale production in US Gulf of Mexico

Shell has launched production from its Whale floating production facility in the US Gulf of Mexico, the company said on Thursday.

The Whale deepwater project is under development by Shell Offshore (60%, operator) and Chevron (40%).

The project has an estimated peak production of 100,000 boepd and recoverable resource volume of 480 million boe.

It is located in Alaminos Canyon Block 773, around 320 kilometres south of Houston and 16 kilometres from the Shell-operated Perdido platform.

The development will feature a semi-submersible production host in more than 2,600 metres of water with 15 wells to be tied back to the host via subsea infrastructure.

Shell achieved first production 7.5 years after the Whale discovery.

“Whale demonstrates our focus on driving more value with less emissions from our upstream business as we deliver the energy people need today,” said Zoë Yujnovich, Shell’s integrated gas and upstream director.
