Mercantile & Maritime Group launches Middle East’s largest biofuel facility

Global energy trader and energy services provider Mercantile & Maritime Group has expanded its MENA Terminals facility in Fujairah with a biofuels processing plant valued at USD 599 million, the Group announced on Wednesday.

Mena Terminals will be expanded by approximately 93,000 square metres to house the plant, which is scheduled for completion in 2026.

Once operational, it will be the largest biofuel processing facility in the Middle East, with the capacity to produce up to 150 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) per year.

“By producing SAF locally, we are reducing the UAE’s reliance on imports, thereby lessening carbon emissions and minimising environmental impact across the entire supply chain, including traditional shipping methods. Alternatively, we will utilise the local rail network to transport SAF across the nation, with future plans for regional distribution,” said Murtaza Lakhani, CEO of Mercantile & Maritime Group.

The facility will integrate AI to optimise refinery operations and maintenance and will operate with a fully carbon-neutral process in alignment with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative.
