L&T wins “ultra-mega” QatarEnergy contract

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Hydrocarbon Business has been awarded an EPCI contract by QatarEnergy LNG for the North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) Offshore Compression Project, L&T announced on Wednesday.

Under the contract, L&T will provide EPCI and commissioning of two offshore compression complexes, each composed of large offshore platforms with compression and power generation facilities, flare platforms, interconnection bridges, living quarters and other associated structures. They will be located approximately 80 kilometres off the northeast coast of Qatar.

L&T did not disclose the value of the contract, but the company’s “ultra-mega” classification indicates it is upwards of USD 1.7 billion. L&T noted in its announcement that it is the largest single contract the company has ever received.

“The award of a project of such nature is a reflection of the confidence and trust placed by QatarEnergy LNG in L&T’s expertise and its ability to deliver such large-scale projects for which L&T is very thankful. This collaboration not only strengthens our partnership but also reaffirms L&T’s commitment to supporting Qatar’s strategic energy objectives,” said Subramanian Sarma, deputy managing director and president of L&T.

The North Field lies off the northeast shore of the Qatar peninsula in an area covering more than 6,000 square kilometres. It is recognised as the world’s largest gasfield and estimated to potentially hold more than 10% of global natural gas reserves. The ongoing multi-phase NFPS project aims to sustain and gradually the field’s yield and support LNG production.
