KUFPEC approved for Indonesian offshore gas development

The Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) has secured approval from the Indonesian government to develop the Anambas block in the Natuna Sea, Reuters reported on Thursday.

KUFPEC will invest around USD 1.54 billion to develop the block, targeting 1.6 mcm per day and an estimated total of 5.2 bcm in gas sales, according to upstream regulator SKK Migas. KUFPEC is targeting a FID in early 2026 and production start in 2028

The Anambas development includes subsea pipelines to the existing West Natuna Transportation System infrastructure and will serve both local and regional markets. The company has completed a joint study on the Natuna D-Alpha Block, known for its massive gas potential and high carbon dioxide content, and is reviewing the results.

“We are working with other partners in Indonesia to reach a mutual agreement to look into more assets to be acquired,” KUFPEC chief executive Eisa Al-Maraghi said at a press conference.

KUFPEC holds a 33% interest in the Natuna Block A and is involved in consortia exploring Indonesia’s Melati and Amanah blocks as part of its expansion in the country. The company is a subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation focused on the exploration, development and production of hydrocarbon resources outside Kuwait.
