Khor Mor gas capacity rises 50% as $1.1 billion Kurdistan expansion project completed early

Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum have completed the $1.1 billion KM250 gas expansion project at the Khor Mor facility in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (KRI) eight months ahead of schedule, marking one of the largest private-sector energy infrastructure projects in the country in recent years.

The KM250 project adds 250 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) of new processing capacity, boosting Khor Mor’s total output to 750 MMscf/d—a 50% increase. The expansion will significantly strengthen power generation across the KRI and contribute to Iraq’s broader electrification goals by delivering cleaner-burning natural gas to regional power plants.

At its peak, the project employed over 10,000 people and required more than 6,000 tonnes of steel and 6.2 million man-hours. The facility incorporates advanced AI-driven monitoring, high-efficiency compression systems, and upgraded sulfur removal processes to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

“The early completion of KM250 underscores our commitment to reliable, cleaner energy for Iraq and demonstrates our operational capability in delivering complex projects,” said Richard Hall, CEO of Dana Gas.

The Khor Mor field, operated by Pearl Petroleum—a consortium of Dana Gas, Crescent Petroleum, OMV, MOL, and RWE—now supplies over 80% of the Kurdistan Region’s power needs, serving more than six million people while displacing oil and diesel use in electricity generation.
