Galp strikes oil again in Namibia with new well

Galp has successfully drilled, cored and logged the Mopane-3X well offshore Namibia and confirmed the presence of light oil and gas condensate in significant quantities, the company announced on Tuesday.

Mopane-3X is located in the southeast region of the Mopane complex in water depths of about 1,200 metres and about 18 kilometres from the Mopane-1X well, where Galp discovered significant oil columns in January 2024. Significant oil columns were again found in the Mopane-2X well, drilled in March 2024.

All three wells lie within Petroleum Exploration Licence 83, which covers almost 10,000 square kilometres in the Orange Basin, located in southern Namibian waters close to the border with South Africa. Galp is the operator with an 80% interest, and its licence partners are the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia and Custos Energy, each with a 10% stake.

Mopane is estimated to hold 10 billion-plus boe, according to Galp’s calculations.

Galp noted that initial fluid samples from Mopane-3X show low oil viscosity and minimum carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide concentrations. Preliminary results and the higher-than-estimated pressures found in Mopane-3X indicate further exploration and appraisal opportunities.

Towards planning future drilling activities, Galp has a 3D seismic acquisition campaign in progress in the area which is expected to be complete in Q1 2025.
