ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Suriname B.V. has formally notified Staatsolie, Suriname’s national oil and gas regulator, that it will withdraw from offshore Block 52, Staatsolie announced on Thursday.
Effective November 14, 2024, ExxonMobil transferred its 50% working interest in the block to Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas, which is the block’s operator. With the transfer, Petronas Suriname E&P comes to hold a 100% working interest in Block 52.
The withdrawal is part of ExxonMobil’s ongoing evaluation of assets in its global portfolio, according to Staatsolie’s announcement.
Block 52 covers an area of 4,749 square kilometres north of the Surinamese coast. Gas was discovered in the block in 2020 with the Sloanea-1 exploration well and again in 2023 with Roystonea-1.
In May 2024, following a renewed commitment by the block’s partners to conduct gas exploration activities on the acreage, Petronas announced a third substantial discovery via the Fusea-1 exploration well, expanding the prospects for integrated gas development.
Following ExxonMobil’s withdrawal, Staatsolie expects Petronas to continue exploration activities in Block 52 without interruption.
