EPA to revise methane rules for marginal wells; IPAA welcomes move

The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) has welcomed President Trump’s announcement that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will revise its methane regulations for oil and gas producers. IPAA said the rules as written would have placed an outsized burden on independent operators of marginal wells.

IPAA President and CEO Edith Naegele said the association joined Trump and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin for the announcement. “As originally written, the regulations would have placed an outsized burden on independent producers and could have threatened the continued operation of hundreds of thousands of marginal wells nationwide,” she said.

According to IPAA, marginal wells make up more than 75% of producing wells in the U.S. and provide a meaningful share of domestic oil and gas supply. The association said they also support local jobs, tax revenue and the communities around them.

IPAA’s statement didn’t say which provisions of the methane rules will change or give a timeline for the revisions.

IPAA recently consolidated with the Domestic Energy Producers Alliance (DEPA). Naegele said the combined group now speaks “with an even stronger voice on behalf of the independent producers.”
