Eni and YPF eye FID on Argentina LNG project

Eni and state-owned Argentine energy company YPF have signed the Final Technical Project Description (FTPD) for the liquefaction segment of the integrated upstream-midstream Argentina LNG (ARGLNG) project, Eni announced on Friday.

The FTPD follows a heads of agreement between Eni and YPF in June 2025 and is a key step towards reaching a positive FID. The document outlines plans for the development of 12 million tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG liquefaction capacity via two FLNG units of 6 million tpy each that will be located offshore Punta Colorada and will process and export gas sourced from the Vaca Muerta formation.

Designed as a phased project, ARGLNG targets to supply up to 30 million tpy of LNG to international markets and grow Argentina’s energy exports. The project is slated for fast-track development by the companies.

“We are proud to have been chosen for such an important project and to contribute to the development of Argentine LNG, which will represent a significant source of supply for international markets. The specific and distinctive expertise we have developed in the FLNG projects in Congo and Mozambique makes us an ideal partner for implementing this type of project,” said Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi.

Eni announced a positive FID on the Coral Norte FLNG Project in Mozambique, the company’s second in the country, on October 2, 2025.

ARGLNG’s development follows Southern Energy FLNG, which became Argentina’s first FLNG project to reach a positive FID in May 2025. The project is being developed by Southern Energy SA (SESA), a joint venture led by Pan American Energy, which holds a 30% interest, together with YPF (25%), Pampa Energía (20%), Harbour Energy (15%) and Golar LNG (10%).
