Egypt Oil Minister Orders Faster Development of Harmattan Gas Field

Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi ordered the acceleration of work to connect the offshore Harmattan gas field to production facilities, as the government seeks to bring new gas resources online and strengthen domestic supplies.

Badawi issued the directive during an inspection visit to the production site of Pharaonic Petroleum Company in Port Said, where he reviewed drilling, exploration and field-development programs across the company’s Mediterranean operations, as well as several new projects. The minister stressed the importance of deploying the latest drilling and exploration technologies to improve success rates and maximize the utilization of Egypt’s natural gas resources.

Badawi instructed officials to accelerate the connection of the Harmattan offshore field to existing production facilities and examine all technical alternatives capable of shortening the project’s implementation schedule.

The move is intended to bring the field into production sooner and make use of its reserves and production potential to support natural gas supplies to Egypt’s domestic market.

Hossam Zaki, chairman of Pharaonic Petroleum Company, said the Harmattan development project is targeting production of approximately 200 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, alongside around 4,400 barrels of condensates per day.

Technical solutions are currently being assessed to accelerate the field’s development timeline. The field is planned to be connected to the Hapi station through a 50-kilometer gas pipeline.
