Effects of Israel-Iran War: Gov’t must turn attention to renewable energy – Kpebu

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has called on government to do more in involving citizens in discussions about the country’s transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

Speaking on the KeyPoints on TV3 on June 21, Kpebu noted that while Ghana remains heavily reliant on crude oil, global trends suggest a major shift toward solar, wind, and other non-fossil fuel alternatives.

“Governments should engage the citizenry more on how we are transitioning from crude oil to non-fossil fuels,” he said.

He referenced the United Kingdom’s aggressive move towards renewables, especially in the North Sea region, where investment in fossil fuels is declining due to government commitment to clean energy.

Despite job losses and pressure from oil companies, the UK remains firm in its transition.

“The UK government is very clear that for them, it’s renewables, solar, wind, et cetera,” Kpebu explained.

He said Ghana must learn from such examples by not only crafting a clear renewable energy policy but also making space for public engagement and accountability in the process.

“There is a rooftop solar revolution,” he added, referencing Ed Miliband’s push to install solar panels on homes across the UK.

“That’s what we also need to do, watch their conversation,” Kpebu stressed.
