Cheniere taps Bechtel for Sabine Pass LNG expansion

Bechtel has received limited notice to proceed from Cheniere Energy Partners for Train 7 at the Sabine Pass Liquefaction (SPL) Expansion Project, the companies announced on Thursday

The SPL Expansion Project comprises up to three liquefaction trains with an expected total production capacity of approximately 20 million tonnes per year (tpy) at peak. Train 7 will bring approximately 5 million tpy, plus about 1 million tpy of boil-off gas re-liquefaction. Full construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027.

“Sabine Pass helped establish the US as a global LNG leader 10 years ago, and today’s milestone demonstrates how that leadership continues to evolve. Over the last decade, Bechtel and Cheniere have shown what is possible when world-class execution meets long-term vision,” said Paul Marsden, president of Bechtel’s energy business.

Bechtel has delivered six liquefaction trains at Sabine Pass between 2016 and 2022 for a total of around 30 million tpy of export capacity.

“The SPL Expansion Project commences as LNG market dynamics highlight the criticality of secure supply in the global energy system,” added Cheniere chairman, president and CEO Jack Fusco.

Sabine Pass LNG is located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana and has approximately 30 million tpy of liquefaction capacity in operation, in addition to five LNG storage tanks and three marine berths. The facility is connected to interstate pipelines through the Creole Trail Pipeline, also owned by Cheniere.

Bechtel currently has 17 liquefaction trains under construction across five sites in the US and Australia for a total liquefaction capacity of about 90 million tpy.
