Afentra has been awarded a licence and 35% operated interest in the KON 4 block in Angola’s onshore Kwanza Basin, the company announced on Wednesday.
The licence covers 1,387 square kilometres in a historically productive area where 11 oil and two gasfields have been discovered and have produced more than 90 million boe to date.
KON 4 includes the Quenguela Norte field, estimated to hold over 200 million barrels of oil in place. Its peak output reached 12,000 bopd before the field was abandoned in 1999, and Afentra assesses that it offers substantial opportunities for reactivation with modern technology and redevelopment techniques.
“KON 4 brings a compelling mix of near-term redevelopment potential – anchored by the Quenguela Norte field – and meaningful exploration upside, supported by favourable fiscal terms and proximity to the Luanda refinery,” said Afentra CEO Paul McDade.
Following the award, Afentra will operate KON 4 with a 35% interest alongside partners Grupo Simples (35%), Sonangol EP (20%), Brite’s Oil and Gas (5%) and Sodedurs (5%).
Afentra has begun technical and subsurface work centred on studies to evaluate reactivation potential, and is reviewing local permitting and above-ground requirements. At the same time, the partners have started assessing the block’s broader exploration potential by integrating a recently completed high-resolution gradiometry survey with existing 2D seismic data.
Afentra is a London-listed upstream oil and gas company focused on acquiring and developing mature producing assets in West Africa. Its core portfolio is centred in Angola and includes production, near-field development and exploration assets.
