ADNOC Drilling Company has been awarded a contract by compatriot ADNOC Offshore for three newbuild island rigs for the Zakum offshore development project in Abu Dhabi, ADNOC Drilling announced on Monday.
The contract is valued at USD 806 million, including mobilisation and options, and brings to six the number of island rig contracts awarded to ADNOC Drilling since July 2024. The company is targeting the deployment of 151 rigs by 2028.
The rigs are designed for the operational environment of ADNOC’s existing and newly constructed artificial islands for drilling and completion of wells, and optimised for extended reach drilling. They will also feature advanced walking capabilities to move between well slots without the need for dismantling. ADNOC Drilling will partner with Honghua Group to embed AI into the rig design.
“ADNOC Drilling is proud to be awarded this significant, long-term contract, marking another major milestone in our accelerated growth journey. These next-generation island rigs, built with embedded AI, represent a leap forward in technology, enhancing safety, efficiency and performance,” said Abdulrahman Abdulla Al Seiari, CEO of ADNOC Drilling.
Located approximately 85 kilometres northwest of the Abu Dhabi islands, Zakum is the second-largest offshore oilfield in the world. It is estimated to hold reserves of 50 billion barrels of oil.

Highwood Emissions Management has announced the launch of their Emissions Intelligence Platform (EIP), a software that streamlines complex measurement-informed methane emissions accounting and reporting for the oil and gas industry.
“EIP closes the gap between measurement and action.” said Thomas Fox, President of Highwood. “It uses empirical data to not only achieve – but to prove – strong performance, maintaining investor confidence and methane accounting compliance in a world of conflicting emissions narratives.”
Developed collaboratively with a steering committee of leading international O&G companies, EIP builds auditable, consistent and framework-compliant methane inventories that comply with global methane initiatives and regulations like OGMP 2.0, EU import requirements, MiQ, Veritas and more, Highwood announced.
“EIP’s reconciliation workflow gives us confidence in our ability to achieve the OGMP 2.0 Gold Standard,” one user commented. “By providing credible, auditable workflows, it empowers us to make informed decisions and have greater confidence in our methane emissions.”
EIP was co-designed with input from the Emissions Intelligence Steering Committee (EISC), comprised of four leading international and US-based O&G companies. This collaboration ensures that the platform directly addresses the challenges faced by O&G companies, from managing reputational risks to improving operational efficiency.
