TGS launches deepwater seismic survey in Angola

TGS has launched a multi-client 2D seismic survey over Angola’s ultra-deepwater acreage, the company announced on Wednesday.

Named Ultra Profundo, the campaign will cover approximately 12,600 line kilometres and is the first multi-client 2D survey to be carried out in Angola’s deep waters since 2015. TGS did not name the clients in its announcement.

TGS commenced operations earlier in Q1 2026 with the 1999-built Ramform Victory, an advanced seismic acquisition vessel capable of towing up to 18 streamers and equipped with broadband GeoStreamer technology. Data acquisition is expected to take 100 days, with early results becoming available in Q3 2026 and full data processing expected by Q2 2027.

The acquisition programme is targeting a largely underexplored area and aims to deliver imaging of pre-salt and top-salt structures and basin channel systems to support oil and gas exploration efforts.

“Angola’s ultra-deepwater margin represents one of the most exciting frontier exploration opportunities in West Africa. Our Ultra Profundo multi-client 2D program delivers high-quality seismic coverage needed to unlock pre-salt and sub-salt potential,” said TGS CEO Kristian Johansen.

Headquartered in Houston, TGS is a global provider of seismic, geological, well and production data and of advanced processing and analytics. In partnership with Angola’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency, the company has acquired more than 69,200 square kilometres of 3D data and more than 50,000 line kilometres of 2D data across the country’s offshore acreage.
